When Ashesh Patel’s grandfather suffered a stroke, his therapists laid out a treatment plan that required extensive rehabilitation, both in the clinic and at home. The repetitive nature of the exercises and the duration of required therapy made the rehabilitation process seem tedious to him. He didn’t adhere to the guidelines, making his recovery process difficult. His occupational therapist tried everything to motivate him to do his exercises – but nothing worked.
After witnessing this problem firsthand, Ashesh set out to help occupational therapists get the resources and tools they need to keep their patients engaged, motivated, and recovering.

A year-long sabbatical allowed William Craelius the time to focus on his passion of helping people through rehabilitative technology.
During his sabbatical, Craelius explored many ideas through the lens of commercialization. They had more than a few ideas under development, two of which showed promise of efficacy and viability as commercial rehabilitation products. As time went on, it became apparent that the two most promising technologies could actually be combined, creating an even more engaging and effective device: the DynaWheel.
| If you ask someone where they would prefer recovering after an acute event, it should come as no surprise when they respond “at home”. Our home is the one place where we should experience the highest level of comfort and safety. Currently, solutions do not exist to allow for that to happen. Whether it is limitations due to cost, efficacy or accountability, patients do not have the option to successfully recover where they choose. | But what if there was a solution that was affordable, effective and even fun for the patient during their rehabilitation process? At Ashana, we are building solutions to meet each of these goals, making recovery at home accessible. |
